When the auctioneer’s gavel fell on the final winning bid during the annual IAOM Conference & Expo in Atlanta, the International Milling Education Foundation had raised over $120,000, edging ever closer to the $1.5 million by 2021 goal that the trustees set for the organization in the fall. The joint live and silent auction held during the annual IAOM Conference & Expo is the largest fundraising event of the year for the Foundation. The total includes winning bids and pledged donations.
“Thanks to the generous support of our members and their companies, we have moved closer to reaching our goal of $1.5 million by the time IAOM turns 125 in 2021,” stated Jeff Hole, IMEF president at the conference. “Each year we wonder if we’ll be able to garner enough support for another round of auctions, and the industry keeps stepping up and donating items to help us raise funds. Members and conference attendees are also key to our success, as they keep bidding up their friends, competitors and suppliers to support the next generation of millers.”
In honor of the recently deceased Christian F. Kongsore, Grain Millers, Inc. donated an additional $54,000 to the IMEF Grain Millers’ Christian F. Kongsore Scholarship Fund. The increased funding will allow IMEF to award more and larger scholarships in Kongsore’s memory to the top students at Kansas State University.
IMEF was especially grateful to the support of the K-State University students who helped with the auction activities.
“The group of students who attend the show were so extremely generous with their time and efforts to help us with the auction,” Hole stated.
“Since IMEF has made it a priority to support milling science students at K-State in the form of scholarships, we also thought that we should support students in the grain science and industry department by helping to upgrade the milling science lab,” Hole stated. “We know how important it is for students to have hands-on experience, so the IMEF board of trustees approved a $20,000 donation to K-State to help with the renovation and renovation of the mill science labs.”
The donations ensure that IMEF will be able to continue to inspire leadership and achievement within the milling community as the Foundation supports learning and knowledge resources.
One of the recent projects funded by the IMEF endowment was the development of a Milling Technician certificate program, which is currently under way at Cowley College in Arkansas City, Kansas. The Milling Technician certificate program is a fully-online college credit program, which allows anyone in the world to enroll in the program. The program is completed with a 250-hour internship at a flour mill. Four cohorts of students are currently enrolled in the program, with a total of 18 students who have either completed or will soon complete the program.
One $4,000 scholarship and one $3,000 scholarship were presented to K-State students during the IMEF Breakfast at the IAOM Conference for the 2018-19 academic year.
Donations to the auction were made by milling companies, individuals, partner organizations, equipment and service suppliers, and others. A full list of the donated items is available below. Thank you to all of the donors and bidders for their continued support.
