During the movement of ingredients to food manufacturing plants and the
delivery of finished food products to grocery markets, different types of
transportation vehicles are utilized. Bulk ingredients are often shipped in
covered hopper cars or in bulk trucks, while packaged ingredients and finished
foods are most often transported in railroad boxcars or truck trailers. As with
all phases of food production, transportation of ingredients, packaging and
finished products must follow correct sanitation and food safety principles.
This twelve minute instructional video presentation (each video program
includes a video tape and script) will focus on the use of truck trailers
because that is the most widely used means of transporting foods. However, most

& Tactical Considerations of a Grain Elevator Explosion
This presentation
gives a detailed account of some of the strategic and tactical
considerations at one of the largest grain elevator explosions ever
documented. The incident occurred on June 8, 1998, at one of the
world’s largest grain elevator storage facilities in the United
States in rural Sedgwick County, Kansas, near Wichita. The lecture
and slide show is presented by Gary E. Curmode, fire chief, Sedgwick
County Fire District No. 1. (2 hours, 50 minutes)

includes creation of standard operating procedures/guidelines and
familiarization tours of the facility. When an emergency occurs, the
incident commander and the grain elevator manager must make multiple
decisions in a very short time. Every emergency is unique, and your
response must be too. It is critical to understand what a plant
manager, supervisor, or emergency responder should do in an
emergency of any magnitude at a grain elevator or grain facility.
This may be a fire or an explosion. This training video shows
tactical considerations and guidelines for these specific
